Sunless Skies FAQ
Last updated 30th August 2017
What does Early Access / Games in Development mean?
Early Access / Games in Development means that this game is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its unfinished current state, then please wait to buy the game when it is fully-released.
What kind of game is Sunless Skies?
Sunless Skies is a top-down literary RPG set amongst the stars. Explore a universe steeped in celestial horror and ravaged by Victorian ambition in Failbetter’s spiritual sequel to Sunless Sea.
What can I currently do in Sunless Skies?
When we launch in Early Access, players will have access to a small but functional piece of the entire game. This is one of the major reasons we decided to launch with only one region (the Reach) at the start: it means we can give players a small taste of what the final game will be like rather than a big taste of an emptier, less representational world.
Players will be able to experience the basic mechanics they’d expect to find in a Failbetter Game, such as Hunger, Terror, combat, exploration and the ability to interact with stories.
Things that are NOT available yet but we aim to add in within the next few months:
- Character creation
- Spectacles: awe-inspiring locations that inspire terror or comfort
- Discoveries: points of interest that provide resources and stories
- Legacies: what captains leave behind for others to further their great work
- Kickstarter Exclusives: Owl Scout and Delicious Rabbit Mascot
I found a bug! / I have feedback! Where do I send it?
Please first check out our Known Issues page and our Bug Formatting page, then send directly to firstname.lastname@example.org! If you’d like to join more general discussions about the game or its gameplay, you can visit any of our forums: Steam, GOG, Reddit or the Failbetter Sunless Skies forum.
I am a Kickstarter Backer but I haven’t received my key, what do I do?
Be sure your Backer Survey is filled out(log into Kickstarter and you’ll see a reminder at the top of the page) and then email email@example.com along with your backer number please!
What are the minimum system requirements?
- OS: Windows XP SP2+ / OS X 10.9+ / Ubuntu 12.04+ / SteamOS+
- Processor: SSE2 instruction set support
- Graphics: DX9 (shader model 3.0) or DX11 with feature level 9.3 capabilities
What controls are currently available? / What about accessibility features?
Initially, mouse and keyboard will be the only option for controls, though the game has been designed with controller support compatibility in mind. The same goes for accessibility features—we’ve aimed to make Sunless Skies as accessible as possible, but you may not see accessibility features in-game until further along in development.
Will it be coming out on Switch / console / etc?
Right now our main focus is on finishing the game and making sure it’s a delight to play.
Will you release a translation into Russian/Chinese/Spanish?
While we’d love to localise Sunless Skies into all sorts of languages, we’re only releasing the game in English. When you consider the word count of our games, our distinct Failbetter style, the admin burden and the technical challenges involved, localisation isn’t a straightforward option for us.
I want to record a let’s play or a first impressions video of your game. Is it okay for me to stream or upload footage?
We would strongly recommend that streamers/YouTubers wait until a few months into Early Access when there will be a fuller experience. However, if you are determined to do a first impression video/series throughout its development, we simply ask that you let your viewers know this is an Early Access game and things are likely to change and evolve.
If you’d like to be notified when we send out preview/review keys, you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll be happy to add you to our press list.
You’re also welcome to monetise the videos for any of our games. But please don’t use it for anything naughty or unlawful. If you like the game, we’d appreciate a link to our Steam page, too of course.
I’m a journalist. How can I get in touch with you?
You can reach us at email@example.com.
