7 Facts About Our Next Game

By Hannah Flynn, September 24, 2016 · Sunless Skies

skyless_logo_1200_675

If you’ve been watching our live interview from EGX this afternoon, you will have heard the exciting news:

Our next game, the sequel to Sunless Sea, will be called Sunless Skies, and we’re doing a Kickstarter for it in February next year!

There’s very little we can say at this early stage, but to whet your appetites:

7 facts about Sunless Skies

  1. As with Sunless Sea, it’ll be rich with stories. The Victorian Empire in space – the High Wilderness – a “blistering, wonderful night” among the thrones and domains of the stars. The Empress has abandoned London and led an exodus to the High Wilderness, to carve out a new British Empire. With the Empire being increasingly authoritarian, bohemians, revolutionaries and outcasts – like you – are trying to make a life for themselves on its fringes.
  2. It will elaborate on Sunless Sea. We’re enhancing the stuff we liked, and refining the experience. It will be a punishing game, but respectful of your time.
  3. At full release, it will be available on the same platforms at launch which Sunless Sea is available on now: Windows, Mac and Linux.
  4. We will use Early Access again, taking on board all of the lessons we learned from Sunless Sea.
  5. Why the name? The stars are dying. The stars are the Judgements: the inventors, arbiters and enforcers of the universe’s laws – but a revolution has begun, and the stars are being murdered.
  6. Our influences include: the science fiction of H G Wells and C S Lewis, the planetary romances of Leigh Brackett, Art Nouveau, Event Horizon, trains.
  7. We are running a Kickstarter for it in February! Stop the clocks, mark your diaries, save your pennies!

At the moment we are in pre-production: art concepts, topline story, weekly seminars looking at different aspects of Sunless Sea that we want to renew or update. We learned a lot creating SS, we’re looking forward to using that knowledge to make a smoother, more engaging sequel.

Will there be a way to get to the surface or the zee? It would be neat to be able to revisit iconic places a few years later. Does pigmote isle finally get respect? What happens to London and the Wolfstack docks? The khananites? Will we be able to sail once more the Neath? Thanks, love the game.

This is very exciting news! I'm a huge fan of your games, and I feel like a sci-fi twist on this kind of genre will be amazing. Can't wait to experience your future works. < 3

Brittany Jan 19, 6:38pm

I just want to second what Zeabear said. Sunless Seas is amazing. But a journal would make it even more so. I play only occasionally but when I come back I can't always remember what I was doing. Otherwise great game!

Whisper Jan 3, 7:15am

There were so many stories still to be told of the zee, and so many other ways they might have been told. I wish Sunless Skies well. I will watch the exodus from the docks, and then return to the water.

The Lore Says This Works, But What About The Other Areas? Jan 3, 3:54am

Mariella, they already showed you how this is going to work if you played through some of Sunless Sea's hidden endings. Did you get the Horizon Codex by playing the Venturer's Venture storyline? The Avid Horizon is a gate to 'The High Wilderness', otherwise known as Space. Clearly, The Traitor Empress figured this out eventually and decided to take advantage of this new horizon. I personally am hype for this, though to be honest I want to know what lies in the OTHER three cardinal directions too. What lands did Salt discover? What mysteries lie in the Elder continent? And what is to the west, behind the Dawn Machine? I don't know how we're going to come back down to explore these other regions if we're jumping straight into space.

Mariella Jan 1, 7:25am

How is this even gonna work? Sunless Seas felt very much like a... product of its time. No real anachronisms, you know? Aside from zubmarines, which I could believe existing under all the marvels of the Neath. However, this is making it seem like Victoria just up and... flew Fallen London into space? That doesn't sound like the 19th century under any circumstances. When I first heard the name "Sunless Skies", I figured it would apply to dirigibles and crude aircraft, not spaceships. I love Sea and Fallen London because of the setting - the Neath is full of wonder and terror. I get if you want to branch out, but space wouldn't be my first choice.

Zeabear Nov 30, 4:38pm

I really liked Sunless Sea but there were three things that, I think, could definitely be improved: 1. No proper ingame journal: Exploring was really fun. But having to re-(re-)explore things is not. So in case to not forget where to buy certain things or what certain stories require for progression you either have to write everything down yourself or go to a wiki. The first option is really tedious but in wikis there are spoilers everywhere. Once I nearly butchered a playthrough because I simply got two islands mixed up concerning where to buy fuel/supplies. Not good. I started to make an excel-spreadsheet but that really did feel pretty much exactly like....well....my work. Also it makes no sense lore-wise because I expect a exploring captain to keep diligent journals about everything he discovers. 2. No warehouse. I get the limited holds on ships, I really do. But not being able to buy/rent a place where to store goods that are currently not needed did not make any sense to me. Due to the nature of the game you pretty much constantly get stuff where you don't know if you maybe need it later and do not want to sell it. Not being able to store them somewhere but having to drag them around (..and eventually sell most of them anyways) was a real letdown. 3. Better legacies. Sunless Sea was/is a roguelike and is built upon the idea to start from scratch. But the real useful legacy-options only come much later in the game when you have figured it out anway (or died trying). Having to sloowwly go through the early game again each and every time is really frustrating, especially if you had a semi-sucessful captain. There should be some midgame options as well that make your life easier in case of a death. This is where the warehouse could also fit in. A place where to put stuff (including fuel/supplies) that your heir inherits. Of course with a limited space (that could be expanded later on).

Scalable UI and text has been available in Sunless Sea since early October - and we'll certainly make it an option in Sunless Skies!

Laurent i Nov 28, 7:26am

I loved the sunless sea early game but: - was quite surprised by what I would call the "cute" element of some of the stories, that didn't fit. - once I realised I would have to slog through item-collection quests with little logic, the temptation to just look solutions up online was too great, I do not have infinite time. - I kind of was expecting that more world changing things would happen, the questing to write a book or find your father's bones doesn't quite match the strong and quite unique feel that the world is decomposing. - I was shocked by how much CPU resources the game required, then kind of expected it to go full 3D on me!

steven Nov 26, 7:06am

Can't wait to back this. Love Sunless Sea. A bit surprised Lovecraft was not listed as an influence. Huh.

Telion Nov 26, 6:22am

I loved sunless sea, but my eyes are still hurting from the lack of scaleable ui. I know it wasn't an option there, but i'd love to have one here! For the love of my eyes please make it a possibility ;). Aside from that major love for your studio and lore!

I love Sunless sea, I got to play with early access a bit on a friends computer, Then forgot about it until Just recently when I saw that there was an expansion. This game is amazing, I look forward to sunless skies as well but I hope you will continue with more content with Sunless sea, maybe even a new map the game is so fun I don't want it to ever end. Maybe a new sea beyond Adam's Way or something.

Qetesh/SomethingSomethingDeep Oct 16, 2:53am

I'm both happy with this announcement and a little sad. The Sunless Sea had many many mysteries that I wanted to explore. I hope to see more of your work however. Good luck!

Lorgar Aurelian Oct 15, 12:29am

If you guys manage to make Sunless Skies even half as good as Sunless Sea is, then you already deserve all literary and gaming prizes on the globe. Never before have I had the pleasure to playing, reading and exploring a world of such subtle, yet unnerving implications, like faint voices drifting in the wind. Also the crazy, surprising, hilarious and sometimes even sad stories kept me glued to the screen for hours and hours on. Make Sunless Skies hard and unforgiving. Make it mesmerizing and scary. Make the player want to sell his soul to the (space)apes! And please, don't forget to include Lovecraft. Everything is better with Lovecraft. Best of luck to you guys. Given the proper time, you will doubtlessly create another masterpiece. I will be throwing money at you in February.

Dark Oct 12, 5:50am

Come with me...to outer space. I've set my calendar for February. There better be lots of that cthuluesque mythos you guys perfected in Sunless Sea and Fallen London, though, as well as the other interstellar influences you mentioned.

Wintermute Oct 12, 4:47am

Hi! I really would like to back sunless skies in February next year. The only Problem i have is, i do not own a Credit Card. So, if you have funded your kickstarter goal really quick, could you set up a possibility to back you via paypal? There are many other Studios which do that (for instance Wasteland 3 has a crowdox site open: https://app.crowdox.com/projects/100109/wasteland-3 , and you can back Wasteland 3 there with paypal). Would be really great, because i wish to pledge as soon as possible. Otherwise i would have to wait till you start in Early Access (and miss all the nice Kickstarter Updates ^^). Keep up the good work.

Victorious Sep 28, 12:38pm

Very noticeable phrase: "It will be a punishing game, but respectful of your time". Does this mean we can ask again for a game speed control in Sunless Sea? Huge amount of wasted time was the reason I stopped playing. The "3x game speed" mod solves the problem somehow, but switching in-game would be helpful when one wants to be precise, like in battles.

Totally missed opportunity for 'Sealess Skies' - closer homage to Sunless Sea and makes more sense in the context of flying space boats amid the sky that hath no sea. Of course this removes the direct branding connect of 'Sunless'.. and moves it to the 'Sea' - I just feel that your explanation for the name of 'the stars are dying' is pretty weak in an infinite universe and sounds like trying to justify a marketing based decision ;)

sunless spelljammer ? count me in "It will elaborate on Sunless Sea. We’re enhancing the stuff we liked, and refining the experience. It will be a punishing game, but respectful of your time." the last part of this sentence makes me especially hopeful as the rather brutal grind that is such a big part of sunless sea and to and even more so fallen london, is unfortunately keeping me from enjoying the very interesting writing as much as I could - I enjoy a well designed skinner box as much as the next game nerd but the reward and the effort need to be in a proper equilibrium looking forward to your efforts

Sounds great guys. I will pitch in with the kickstarter without doubt. If I could add one thing - I know stories are your forte and bread and butter but could you do a more robust/expansive/deep trading system pretty please? Your stories hold me for 50 hours and I loved them but trading/leveling up/buying better ships/equipment extends the game time by a threefold factor. thanks

Part of me is hoping for a Night of the Galactic Railroad reference, with that train mention, but I don't suppose it's the right genre.

Optimatum Sep 25, 1:15am

Ross: The Fallen London universe seems Lovecraftian at first glance, but it has a pretty integral difference. Lovecraft is cosmic horror with incredibly huge, powerful entities out there that are completely alien and don't care about us at all. Fallen London has the first part, but those entities next to which we are like dust? They're still understandable, with emotions and petty squabbles and occasionally even interest in humans.
