Fallen London Reworks

By Haley Uyrus, May 22, 2017 · Fallen London

Delicious friends, over the coming months, we have exciting plans for Fallen London. As we alluded to in the last FBG Podcast, we have been working on a special Fallen London project, which we’re delighted to now announce.

A dedicated team of Cash (writing and design), Sam (tech), and Caolain (analytics and design) have already begun work. Their remit: to address a range of Fallen London content and systems that have been awaiting development. Systems we’ve wanted to expand. Stories we want to finish.

Some of their work will take place behind the scenes, improving our tools for writing Fallen London content. Much of it, however, will take centre stage. We’ve deliberated what’s possible development-wise within 2017, and what will be most delectable to you, our players.

The team’s priorities include continuations of some of Fallen London’s most long-awaited stories. The Cheery Man and the Last Constable. The Dilmun Club. A Return to the Empress’ Court. And – dare we say it? – the next chapter in the Light Fingers ambition!

To begin with, we’ll be continuing to add new factions to the Favour/Renown system, including prestigious new items to be earned from the Constables and Hell. Perhaps you’d like to be belt out a Hellish Hymn, or be one of the few who knows about the Place Where they Bury the Bodies. We’ll also be releasing an expansion to the social content available through your Lodgings, taking advantage of some changes in the technology that governs social acts.

The project is scheduled to last for much of the rest of year. It will take place in addition to our regular release of Exceptional Stories and seasonal events (who will run for mayor of Fallen London this year, we wonder? Rumour has it we’ll be seeing our first bandaged candidate…), so please bear with us. Throughout the process, we’ll be sure to keep informed with what we’ve been up to and will also be interested to hear your feedback as each update goes live!

I've been playing Fallen London on and off over the years and since it was Echo Bazaar. I know Sunless Sea and now Sunless Skies are bigger money makers for you but I'm really, really happy you're focusing on development of the core game beyond the Exceptional Stories because, to be blunt, over my various characters I gotta say I've sunk a lot of funds into this project. (I've never played without being an Exceptional Friend even early days and I'm slowly going back and purchasing more Exceptional Stories, now. There's lots of the little asides I'm re-purchasing for this character, especially now knowing you're getting back to working on the core game.) I know it's a niche game and needs support, I'm happy to support it, and what exists is absolutely gorgeous but I'm very eager for more!

What an exciting news! Can't wait to the new hell items and the new chapter of light fingers!

DonaghyLogan May 26, 4:22pm

@CatQuest You shouldn't need to spend fate for the Rookery Password to work . . . it sounds like you might have a bug, as I've never had to pay fate to grind Renown: Urchins. Also, Renown 100 should be completely impossible, so perhaps the option you're seeing is rather like the Parabolan Base-Camp in its lack of current feasibility for any player.

CatQuest May 26, 8:21am

"God, I hope your update includes adding more options to increase your Renown. As is, it's a heartless grind of Favours with too much pain for too little gain." This, so very, very this, I don't like the renown system one bit, as it's a thankless grind where you actually have to look up in a wiki to find out what (few) options give you favours. and you have to pay fate to use the Rookery Password! How about making the options to increase favours in the carnival still work past 5 renown? or a second option if renown >5 which is considerably higher in difficulty, so that one can at-least increase favour to 5 *one more time* before the grind. there are options for, e.g. Urchins that require 100 renown! As it is now I dread when other factions "get turned into the renown system" it removes the fun of a big part of the game.

Give us back Knife and Candle, please!

EustaceCS May 24, 6:33pm

Starveling Cat for Mayor!

Wistful Hangman May 24, 12:39pm

Yes! Thank you

Sir Reginald Whalerob May 24, 7:25am

Ah, wonderful. Truly delicious.

Dune May 23, 5:28pm

My goodness, the Family Matters storyline is getting another chapter? Madness, I say. Pure, ankle-flashing madness.

Jorge F. Robles May 23, 3:46pm

Oh goodie, oh goody. Exceptional stories have been quite good, but we await a return to the canon in light of Sunless Sea's many revelations.

Mzingalwa May 23, 8:03am

I am really happy to hear about this! I've been loving the exceptional stories, but for a long time I've really been wishing to see progress on all those long-unfinished plotlines. I hope you guys move on to the other ambitions soon after you're done with light fingers, I've been anticipating their conclusions for a long time.

Terryago May 23, 7:44am

Obviously delighted to here about more content. I would hazard a thought on giving some love to the mobile app, which on a whole works quite well but has loading time/logging in/syncing issues that can make gameplay quite tedious at times. Keep up the good work!

Kindoflame May 23, 4:59am

I am glad to hear that there will be more to this exciting game. If I may be so bold, I would suggest having the results of Exceptional Stories effect the future of the city's collective story. Something like 'If the majority of people end the story with option A, then content B will be released to everyone; if the majority of people end the story with option C, then content D will be released to everyone'. A election for London's mayor is a great example of this type of story development. P.S. If Hiram McDaniels runs for mayor, then I will donate $100 to both cities.

Sir Frederick Tanah-Chook May 23, 4:14am

@Miriam - The Ambition updates aren't revision of existing content - they're new chapters being added to the yet-unfinished stories. Light Fingers is one chapter behind the others, and so is due an update.

Cameron Lennox May 23, 12:41am

Oh man, new Hell items. Can't wait for this project to be completed!

Asdar May 22, 11:42pm

My Chorister's Bomb is ready, and there is no end to my patience.

Pnakotic May 22, 10:55pm

Oh good, I've been eagerly awaiting an expedition with the Dilmun club for ages! Not to mention more connected goodies and another election! Hmmm... bandages. Fedducci? The Once-Dashing Smuggler? Lettice?

Ash May 22, 10:10pm

Good news! I've been waiting for ages for more of the Dilmun Club (and have refused to get myself exiled from court until there was a way back, so maybe this year will be the year I see the Foreign Office...)

Max May 22, 9:48pm

Great to hear! Will there also be some quality of life improvements- like not getting constant "but your in a storylet so u can't do this" messages (even when the storylet is just another equipment action or being in the bazaar side streets)? Or being able to buy AND sell at appropriate vendors rather than do it in separate shops?

SirKwint May 22, 8:34pm

Wow-wow-wow! What wonderful news! Screw the fact that I'm barely making first steps in the Neath and know little of fabled Light Fingers - you guys rock, and you've created a jewel with nothing but a handful of pictures and tons of delicious words. You are the best!

Anna Libertas May 22, 8:02pm

@Miriam Lightfingers has gone the longest without an update by a fairly large margin so I suspect that would be why they took the time to mention it in the post - Hearts Desire was updated in June 2015 which is still a fairly long time ago but two years is much less of a priority than five

matrixcode May 22, 6:12pm

did someone say... Light fingers?

Shalinoth May 22, 5:33pm

Thank you for putting renewed effort into Fallen London! Dilmun! Light Fingers! Hell Hymns! Yes, please.

Aronia May 22, 5:02pm

The Dilmun Club! Oooooh, the Dilmun Club. I've been waiting for it!

GuesssWho May 22, 4:49pm

I'd love to have a way of being Closest To the Clay Men or the Rubbery Men, for extra weirdness.

Viti May 22, 4:47pm

Wonderful news! When can we expect the first update?

Melancholeric May 22, 3:39pm

God, I hope your update includes adding more options to increae your Renown. As is, it's a heartless grind of Favours with too much pain for too little gain.

Serge May 22, 3:32pm

Any news about Parabolan Base-Camp? :)

Von Darken May 22, 3:18pm

I have but one word: HOORAY!

Alberto di Beretta May 22, 3:14pm

I feel excited

Akernia May 22, 2:54pm

That is amazing. Super excited to see this! Especially as the Dilmun Club and the Empress' Court are two of my favourite stories and that Light Fingers are my (current) Ambition. I can't wait!

Father Torque May 22, 2:52pm

Great news! Could you add a few seconds to take a look at FL's accessiblity regarding image description? Storylet requirements come to mind.

Miriam May 22, 2:43pm

Thanks for all your work on this. I am wondering... Light Fingers is already widely acclaimed as the "best" of the ambition story lines. Given that, I'm surprised that it is being singled out for more work. I'd much rather see a new ambition that uses a different set of stats, or improvements in hearts desire, which is reputed to be the weakest of the ambition story lines. Despite that, no matter what you do, I'm sure it will be delicious.

Jeff Crowl May 22, 2:38pm

This sounds very exciting, but what of the other 75% of us who're on a different Ambition? It seems to have been some years since we've seen new content on those stories. Thank you for the marvelous game, -Jeff

Porrima May 22, 2:38pm

Most cromulent to still have content to the browser game too, given that you are probably busy with certain other projects too. P.S. Saying this in hindsight is worthless, but at the previous election I already knew from the very start who would win. While the three candidates then presented a good spectrum of what in-universe londoners might vote for, the players aren't really subterranean Victorians, and I knew Jenny would be the only appealing candidate for sensibilities of most players playing this kind of a game. If I may say, for the next elections, perhaps choose candidates that are all equal in appeal out-of-universe as well.

Saga Skalicky May 22, 12:43pm

Can it really be? The next chapter of Light Fingers? Oh, be still my heart.

Phillip Dodson May 22, 12:40pm

This blog post is Christmas morning, glad to know as you drift off into the sky you still remember those of us down here!

Oli Rose May 22, 12:40pm

Maybe once you complete 1 ambition, you can start a second, but never a third.

Penny Worth May 22, 12:30pm

This is all very good news and I wish to express my gratitude for this browser game that has quickly become one of my favourites. I have played more hours of this than I have devoted to what brought me to it, Sunless Sea! Thank you and keep up the good work ;)
