Charitable Endeavours 2019

By Hannah Flynn, October 5, 2018 · Failbetter Sunless Skies

We are planning on running a charitable event to coincide with the release of our next game, SUNLESS SKIES, in early 2019.

We wanted the choice of charity beneficiary to reflect our values and the values of our community, so we asked you to nominate charities that were important to you.

We were very touched by the suggestions, and the coming together of our interests with yours. LGBT charities were nominated alongside mental health, children’s and non-profit tech advocacy groups; international next to local. Of around 20 charities nominated, there were four which Failbetter staff have managed to shortlist for your vote. We present them briefly here, and hope that you’ll read about their work at the links provided:

Mind |The mental health charity

“We provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. We won’t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.”

Médecins Sans Frontières | Doctors Without Borders

“Our medical teams act fast to save people’s lives in conflict zones, natural disasters and epidemics. We go where we are needed most.”

Against Malaria Foundation | Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) works to prevent the spread of malaria by distributing long-lasting, insecticide-treated mosquito nets to susceptible populations in developing countries.

Special Effect | The gamers’ charity

“We put fun and inclusion back into the lives of people with physical disabilities by helping them to play video games.”

Place your vote via our twitter poll.

PS Here’s the longlist; if you’re looking for a charity to support yourself, any one of them would be very deserving:

Sorry, latecomer here. Regrettably, I am not too familiar with charitable organisations, aside from perhaps those very local ones in my neighbourhood (I live in Southeast Asia, btw) and the really big icons (like Red Cross and Doctor Without Borders), so I will not embarrass myself by throwing out names. However, though it might be slightly too late, may I suggest something else? Failbetter sweeps over the world with its literary flourish. It would be nice if it could support a cause that, say, aims to improve the literacy of children, or people in general? I played a game once, which one of the protagonists has the Asperger's syndrome. And then on the sale, it is stated that some of the revenue (50% of the background music soundtrack) would go to a charity for autism. As a man belonging to the autistic spectrum myself, this has been one of the most wonderful things I have ever found on the internet. I wonder if anybody will ever see this comment. If Failbetter's developers ever see this, even if it will be too troublesome to put in this poll, hope you can consider this in your future projects.
