ANYTHING NICE: King of Dragon Pass (David Dunham)

We've talked about KoDP before. It's spent fifteen years becoming a well-deserved overnight success on tablets, and it's playable on PC again now, so you should do that, if you haven't.

One small clever thing I like. In story choices, your clan council members (who you select and recruit) have advice for you. You can get that advice in a text bubble by mousing over that icon - the ease and low commitment of that interaction means that you'll usually do it. The world-lore of KoDP is complex and unusual, and you'll often need guidance.

This is an effective way to ease you into the lore, one frothing and sliding fact at a time. It ensures you'll choose council members for their personalities, and their advice, as well as for their stats. And this in turn means you develop a surprisingly strong relationship with characters who only ever express themselves through transient speech bubbles.

'Anything Nice' is is a series of very short posts highlighting things I liked about the treatment of narrative in other people's games. It's a deliberately magpie, grab-bag approach. Some of these games I adore, some I don't even like, but I learnt from all of them.
