Exceptional Friendship is a subscription that comes with a raft of perks, best of all being a new, substantial story every month. Incredibly, we’re now at over a hundred Exceptional Stories since they were introduced in 2015. However, we know that the average subscriber has played only a third of what’s available.

We’ve been thinking for a while about a way to open up that library to keen players who’ve missed a good chunk of our past stories. So from today, we’re introducing a new subscription tier: Enhanced Exceptional Friendship.

Enhanced Exceptional Friends will be able to play a back-catalogue story every month at a cost which works out as about a 40% discount on buying the same story from the Fate page. Plus we’re throwing in even more perks: three seven-action refreshes every month and fun things to do in the House of Chimes.

Our Exceptional Friends are a huge part of making Fallen London what it is. Having predictable revenue month to month is so crucial to our ability to take creative risks as a studio. How does Enhanced Exceptional Friendship work?

Enhanced Exceptional Friendship will cost 7.50 USD per month on top of an existing Exceptional Friendship subscription. This makes the total monthly cost 16.50 USD, for the following benefits:

Existing Exceptional Friends can enhance their subscription from the Fate page. Non-subscribers can subscribe as an Exceptional Friend, or jump straight to an Enhanced subscription. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time.

The Monthly Story Menu

Each month, Enhanced Exceptional Friends can choose from a curated menu of six past Exceptional Stories. You can choose to play one new story or reset two stories from the list.

The story menu will contain a blend of stories from Fallen London's history; a mix of fan favourites and overlooked gems.

The menu for the first month is as follows:

Each month, three stories will rotate out from the menu and three more will be added. So, each story will be available for two months. (Because of Maths, for the first month only, the first three stories from the above list will rotate out after only one month.)

Action Refreshes

Enhanced Exceptional Friends will receive three seven-action refreshes each month, to make it easier to play your additional Exceptional Stories. These will be spent via the Refresh button on your candles, and thus can be spent anywhere. They don’t roll over, so make sure to use them!

House of Chimes Update

The Reluctant Barrister has fallen into the role of an eager lobbyist – brokering votes, favours, and exchanges. "Have you considered which way you're going to land on this one?"

All Exceptional Friends now have access to a new small activity in the House of Chimes which allows you to select monthly perks to shape your play.

The perks include:

The number of perks you can choose will increase while you have an active subscription: one perk in month one, two in month two, and three in month three. Exceptional Friends will stay at three thereafter; Enhanced Exceptional Friends can build up to six per month, again with a continuous subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does billing work?

The total cost of being an Enhanced Exceptional Friend is 16.50 USD a month.

You can upgrade anytime in your billing cycle, and you will be charged 7.50 USD at that point for immediate access to your story and perks.

Then, the next time you are due to be charged for Exceptional Friendship, you will be charged the full 16.50 USD.

If you cancel your Enhanced Exceptional Friendship subscription at any point, you’ll have until your next billing date to claim that month’s story, pick up your perks from the House of Chimes, and play your action refreshes.

How has the menu of stories been selected?

We’ve curated the selection, so each month there’ll be popular stories on offer next to more overlooked stories. We have lined up the menu until 2025, when newer and as-yet-unreleased stories will be rotated in.

Will the menu include all Exceptional Stories in the back catalogue?

It won’t include Flint, nor premium stories such as The Poisoner's Library or The Mushroom's Dream.

When exactly does the menu change over?

The six stories on the Enhanced Exceptional Friendship menu will change by calendar month (unlike the new Exceptional Stories, which are released on the last Thursday of the previous month). This way, both the new stories and old will have their moment to shine.

Will I get Memories of a Tale from playing the back catalogue stories?

Yes, even if you’re doing two resets; it’s therefore possible to earn three Memories of a Tale in a month (one new Exceptional Story + two Resets) with Enhanced Exceptional Friendship.

What happens if I don’t choose a story in a given month?

Unlike your standard subscription, we’re not able to automatically assign you a back catalogue story: you need to make a choice from the menu. If you don’t choose one in a given month, it won’t roll over to the next.

Will the additional stories save in our Exceptional Library?

Once you’ve made your selection for the month, you have the new story or back-catalogue stories to play whenever you like, starting in your Exceptional Library.

What about if I don’t use my action refreshes or House of Chimes perks in a given month?

These will not carry over month to month, so be sure to use them!

Where are my action refreshes?

You’ll be able to spend them from the left hand sidebar when your actions reach 0.

Can I reset the same story twice?

If you really want to! You can reset the same story from the menu twice in a single month.
