When is the release date for Sovereign?

By Sara Veal, September 16, 2020 · Sunless Skies

When we last talked about the release date of the Sovereign Edition, we said we expected it to come out in August or September.  Unfortunately, we need to delay it, for two reasons.

First, the performance optimisations needed for Sunless Skies to run smoothly on consoles have turned out to be more complex than we expected.  Second, the ongoing pandemic has caused severe disruptions that have affected the rate of work.

We’d hoped we’d be able to share a new release date with you.  However, the time that will be needed for the remaining optimisations still isn’t clear, and we don’t want to announce a date that we might miss.  We’ll let you know as soon as we have a release window we’re confident in.

We realise some people might want us to release the Sovereign Edition on PC first.  However, that isn’t really something we can do.  We’re not sitting on a release-ready PC version, waiting for the console ports to be finished.

The Sovereign Edition is meant to be the definitive version of the game, which includes being as smooth and bug-free as we can make it.  The PC and console versions share code, so that both will benefit from all the performance improvements and bug fixes developed for the ports.

We’re sorry to have to keep you waiting.  We’re excited about the improvements in the Sovereign Edition, and have been looking forward to sharing them with you.  We’ll announce a new release date as soon as we can.

Thanks for the update. I have been patiently waiting, and can wait longer. I have often wondered what's next: perhaps a "Sunless Depths" game where the player enters the 9 levels of Hell? Or, "Sunless Void," where the player is launched into space? Where do we go from here? I have often wondered what a Sunless Sea game would be like if, when you crossed into the Avid Horizon, you ended up in what would become Albion. Though, the game would end quickly, since all you'd have is a boat, and not a sky engine. Anyway, Sunless Sea, Zubmariner and Sunless Skies are he best $53 I ever spent. Keep up the good work. Yours, KMac

whatever's necessary to make it the best game it can be!

Console ports are so toxic to pc gaming. Just another example to add to the pile.

Absolutely thrilled to find out this is coming to PS4. I love Sunless Sea on PS4 so much and my laptop can't run games at all so I thought I would never get to play the sequel. I can't wait!

I appreciate the upfront update and transparency. Aiming to put the game in a definitive, final state as opposed to suffering from endless updates is something I think a lot of modern developers neglect to do. So keep up the good work! I think this is the right attitude even if I can't wait to get my hands on that final version myself!

No worries, take all the time you need!

Well, that's more time for me to actually finish Sunless Seas before starting Sunless Skies. Take as much time as you need, of course. Your games have helped me get through this troubled period, so the last thing I want is for you to work yourselves to the bone.

No worries! We're in some pretty insane times right now, I don't think anyone would fault you all for being behind "schedule" while we're operating out of a global pandemic. Plus, these things just happen. The world isn't perfect, and I don't think I'm the only one who feels that I'd be happy to wait for the best quality game y'all are gonna put out
