When is the release date for Sovereign?

By Sara Veal, September 16, 2020 · Sunless Skies

When we last talked about the release date of the Sovereign Edition, we said we expected it to come out in August or September.  Unfortunately, we need to delay it, for two reasons.

First, the performance optimisations needed for Sunless Skies to run smoothly on consoles have turned out to be more complex than we expected.  Second, the ongoing pandemic has caused severe disruptions that have affected the rate of work.

We’d hoped we’d be able to share a new release date with you.  However, the time that will be needed for the remaining optimisations still isn’t clear, and we don’t want to announce a date that we might miss.  We’ll let you know as soon as we have a release window we’re confident in.

We realise some people might want us to release the Sovereign Edition on PC first.  However, that isn’t really something we can do.  We’re not sitting on a release-ready PC version, waiting for the console ports to be finished.

The Sovereign Edition is meant to be the definitive version of the game, which includes being as smooth and bug-free as we can make it.  The PC and console versions share code, so that both will benefit from all the performance improvements and bug fixes developed for the ports.

We’re sorry to have to keep you waiting.  We’re excited about the improvements in the Sovereign Edition, and have been looking forward to sharing them with you.  We’ll announce a new release date as soon as we can.

Two years later and still waiting :( Damn you's Covid! Damn You's All To Hell!

I eagerly await the release of this wonderful piece of bizzare fiction on the switch. As someone who has lived the sunless universe since the days of fallen london, I can't wait to be once more utterly frustrated by the shreds of information we get dangled in our faces as we try to make sence of something that may not have any true answer. Huzzah! It's been years and I still

Is the Switch version going to be available in AUS/NZ region as Sunless Sea is not available on the switch in those regions despite being on the PS store?

Still keeping my fingers crossed for a X-mas release.

This is understandable. Originally I thought I was going crazy because when I looked on the PSN store for Sunless Skies I only got Sunless Sea: Zubmarine Edition. Then I realized that Zubmarine Edition was released after Sunless Sea came out. It clicked after that. With that being said, I hope everyone at Failbetter Games is doing well & is safe during this pandemic. I hope that one day the PS4 will get the character creator & game that we all crave. Best wishes.

I just picked up the game on Steam, and I love it! ... Yet, I play with a controller. That said, I sure do hope (becoming a console release and all) that the "Full Controller Support" listed on Steam is improved.

I'm excited for this to finally be released so us console players can play. I bought sunless sea when it was ported to consoles and am enjoying it even though I have no idea what I'm doing. I'll be eagerly awaiting for the day I can buy and play it on my Xbox.

“Her Renewed Majesty hereby grants you a bequest of hours sufficient to ensure the completion of this important task. You will, in addition, receive a regular allowance of tea. The relevant ministry officials have already been notified.” The Aloof Harbinger turns on his heels. You catch a glimpse of something decidedly un-eyelike behind the rim of his mirrored monocle. You are (not quite) alone with the yawning weight of Her Majesty’s expectations.

Take your time! I'll enjoy fallen london and sunless sea in the meantime. The longer it takes the more I forget about skies story and I'm so excited to dive back in!

I am still thrilled to hear you're making progress and wish you the best possible for the game. Take as much time as you need to finish it and I will once again return to it once the update launches

Trodamus Oct 5, 12:47am

Just as long as you guys stay safe and healthy :)

Jonathan Sep 27, 6:16am

As someone who has been eagerly awaiting the Switch launch, thank-you for this update! It is great to hear that the Failbetter team is taking steps to avoid placing writers and developers under crunch.

KMac Sep 23, 4:19am

Thanks for the update. I have been patiently waiting, and can wait longer. I have often wondered what's next: perhaps a "Sunless Depths" game where the player enters the 9 levels of Hell? Or, "Sunless Void," where the player is launched into space? Where do we go from here? I have often wondered what a Sunless Sea game would be like if, when you crossed into the Avid Horizon, you ended up in what would become Albion. Though, the game would end quickly, since all you'd have is a boat, and not a sky engine. Anyway, Sunless Sea, Zubmariner and Sunless Skies are he best $53 I ever spent. Keep up the good work. Yours, KMac

whatever's necessary to make it the best game it can be!

Alex Sep 21, 4:53pm

Console ports are so toxic to pc gaming. Just another example to add to the pile.

Ian Sep 20, 11:42pm

Absolutely thrilled to find out this is coming to PS4. I love Sunless Sea on PS4 so much and my laptop can't run games at all so I thought I would never get to play the sequel. I can't wait!

Astral Sep 20, 2:32am

I appreciate the upfront update and transparency. Aiming to put the game in a definitive, final state as opposed to suffering from endless updates is something I think a lot of modern developers neglect to do. So keep up the good work! I think this is the right attitude even if I can't wait to get my hands on that final version myself!

krmit Sep 18, 7:08pm

No worries, take all the time you need!

Zahariel Sep 17, 10:33am

Well, that's more time for me to actually finish Sunless Seas before starting Sunless Skies. Take as much time as you need, of course. Your games have helped me get through this troubled period, so the last thing I want is for you to work yourselves to the bone.

Aman Sep 16, 1:46pm

No worries! We're in some pretty insane times right now, I don't think anyone would fault you all for being behind "schedule" while we're operating out of a global pandemic. Plus, these things just happen. The world isn't perfect, and I don't think I'm the only one who feels that I'd be happy to wait for the best quality game y'all are gonna put out
